Canchias Bridge Project Ends: Armenta Water Project Begins!

9 Jan

The Canchias Agricultural Bridge Project, now completed, is just one of many projects that make up the Armenta Program at  the EWB-Chicagoland Professional chapter. Engineers Without Borders is set up to house programs generating multiple projects that help ensure a more long-term commitment to a community.

The Armenta Pedestrian Bridge Project kicked off the program, and now that a vehicular bridge has been completed at nearby Canchias, the team is ready to return to Armenta for another project. Now in its early assessment phase, the Armenta Water Distribution Project will provide Armenta with an essential need: better access to water. The PI of the project, Scott, explains in the report:

The community is seeking assistance in both development of an engineering solution to provide an ample water supply as well as project funding. This project is necessary as homes in Armenta only receive water one day a week. The medical center that treats both people and animals often goes without water for days, greatly hampering their ability to adequately serve the community. The people we visited are allowed to fill up their pillas (home water storage facility) one day a week. They draw all water for drinking, preparing food, laundry, bathing, sanitation, etc, from that single source.  While water quality is tested as good for consumption, point of use contamination is likely due to prolonged containment in individual homes.

The immediate benefit of successfully meeting the community’s need for clean water will be a celebration of opportunities; opportunity to have an ample supply of clean water for all household needs mentioned above, restoration of human dignity, and general well being.

As the team has transitioned from the Canchias Bridge Project to the Armenta Water Distribution Project, so too must our web presence. The Canchias Bridge Project will be archived — a few more posts containing final project information will be posted, but the site’s activity will dwindle down to a null.

If you’d like bookmark our archive, please change your bookmarking link from www.ewbcanchias.org to ewbcanchias.wordpress.com.

To watch and interact with the team on our new project, please visit the new Armenta Water Distribution Project site. We look forward to seeing you there!

Final Holiday Campaign Update

3 Jan

Thanks to everyone who donated to our 2010 Holiday Campaign!

Postcards have been sent out this past week, though you might notice a Chicago postal mark. Our final budget ended up being more than $100,000, (see final budget breakdown here) and while the team was able to raise almost that amount, we didn’t quite make the whole thing.

This meant that any final dollars needed to go the bridge completion (and Canchias community), and so we saved some money by mailing our postcards from Chicago instead of Honduras, and while we were able to send out the artisan crafts, the commemorative calendars didn’t make it. We very much apologize for this, but please know that every dollar counted — and went to the project, above all.

Please contact a team member if you have any more questions, and again, we thank you for both your generosity and your understanding.

The bridge was completed in May by the Team 7 of the implementation phase. The field journal can be accessed here, with a sneak peak below.

EWB Canchias and the Original Winger

26 Sep

Be sure to check out a fantastic new post at the Original Winger about soccer, community empowerment, and Canchias! A partnership between the soccer organization and Canchias was fostered by Dan Schulte, a major force on the EWB Canchias team. As as a part of the 32 Panels Project, this partnership “will help enhance and enrich the lives of the next generation of soccer players.” A huge thank you to the Original Winger and Dan!
