Location–Need–Benefit–Design–Budget
Thru the resources of Heart to Honduras (HTH), 110 acres of land are available for the people of Canchias and surrounding communities to use as agricultural and dairy land. Because the region is so mountainous, however, it is only accessible by crossing the Yure River.
While a footbridge is present, it is unstable for the farmers who have to carry heavy loads and for children carrying the free dairy products back to their schools. In addition, crossing the river causes expensive damage to the underside of wheeled vehicles and is dangerous for fully loaded animals.
In 2009, a small team of engineers from the EWB-CPC visited Canchias and met with the village president, farmers, dairy workers and school children. They heard first-hand stories of how people had fallen off the bridge while carrying heavy loads. The community of Canchias requested the assistance of EWB to work with them to design a 120’ vehicle bridge over the Yure River to access this land.
EWB will work with Canchias community members and partner HTH to make this bridge a reality!
